Creative Writing Workshop “Creative Writing Immersion” for Neurodivergent Young Adults

By participating in these training courses, neurodivergent young adults will gain valuable skills and knowledge, opening brighter futures and increased opportunities in both their personal and professional lives.

Workshop Objectives:

  1. Foster creativity and self-expression through writing.
  2. Provide tools and techniques to improve writing skills.
  3. Create an inclusive and supportive environment for all participants.

Duration: 6 hours (including breaks)

Required Materials:

  • Notebooks and pens
  • Laptops or tablets (optional)
  • Projector and screen (for presentations)
  • Art materials (for visual writing part)

Workshop Program:

9:00 – 9:30 AM: Welcome and Introduction

  • Activity: Introduction of the facilitator and participants.
  • Content: Explanation of the workshop’s purpose and the day’s agenda.
  • Activity: Video clips of imaginative images and projects by other creative young people.
  • Exercise: What problem/dilemma did that creativity solve?

9:30 – 10:30 AM: Introduction to Creative Writing

  • Topic: Why is creative writing important right now?
  • Activity: Group discussion/digital search for examples of different forms of creative writing (advertising, literature, memes, comic books, stories, poetry, essays, etc.).
  • Exercise: Write a brief paragraph describing an image/photograph presented to each team member. Does any of these images bring a memory or a happy recollection?

10:30 – 10:45 AM: Break

10:45 – 12:00 PM: Creative Writing Techniques and Strategies

  • Topic: Techniques to stimulate creativity (creating new mental images, how to stimulate curiosity, creating new thought patterns, mind maps, brainstorming, etc.).
  • Activity: Create a mind map on a topic chosen by each subgroup.
  • Exercise: Write a two-paragraph story using that mind map as a guide.

12:00 – 1:00 PM: Lunch

  • Keynote Speaker: 20-minute talk during lunch.

1:00 – 2:30 PM: Visual Writing

  • Topic: Using images and objects as inspiration for writing. Analysis of creative videos on various topics.
  • Activity: Selection of an image or object seen in the video and written development of a new version of the same video.
  • Exercise: Write a line about the video seen. Each participant exchanges paper with a neighbor to complete another parallel thought on the same creative writing.

2:30 – 2:45 PM: Break

2:45 – 3:45 PM: Character Development and Dialogue

  • Topic: How to create realistic characters and credible dialogues.
  • Activity: Examples of creative dialogues from literature, cinema, theater. Dramatic reading of some examples.
  • Exercise: Create a character (fictional) and write a brief scene in which they interact with the participant who created the fictional character.

3:45 – 4:45 PM: Sharing and Feedback

  • Activity: Participants will share their work with the group.
  • Dynamic: Constructive and positive comments from peers and the facilitator.

4:45 – 5:00 PM: Closing and Evaluation

  • Activity: Reflection and highlights of the best moments of the day and the most notable discussions and learnings.
  • Exercise: Who do you want to be like as a writer? Why?
  • Dynamic: Thanks, and farewell.

Special Considerations:

  • Adaptations: Provide necessary adaptations and supports according to participants’ specific needs (e.g., additional breaks, use of assisted technology, etc.).
  • Inclusive Environment: Foster a respectful and accepting environment where all participants feel comfortable to express themselves freely.
  • Additional Resources: Availability of additional materials (e.g., reference books, examples of creative writing, etc.) to inspire and support participants.
